While in law school, Mr. Barkin worked for the United States Department of Justice, completing an internship with the Office of the General Counsel for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, D.C. He served as legal intern in the Civil and Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami, Florida. Mr. Barkin was a law clerk to District State Magistrates Peter Palermo and Herbert Shapiro in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Upon admittance to the Florida Bar, Mr. Barkin served six years as an Assistant State Attorney in the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office, handling a wide range of criminal cases, including complex homicides and other serious offenses, including capital felonies. He subsequently gained experience in diverse areas of both criminal and civil litigation as an associate in two different law firms in Boca Raton, before establishing his own practice there in 1988.
Presently, Richard Barkin maintains a general civil and criminal litigation practice, with a heavy emphasis on family law and criminal defense.
